Mutes are associated to the Jagex account and will be active in all products that account uses. This means that an account muted for rule breaking in RuneScape will also be muted in the Old School game and vice-versa.

You will still have the option to use Quick Chat either in a regular world or on a Quick Chat only world where everyone uses quick chat. You will still be able to view and read our forums. There are four types of mutes you can receive:

A system mute is triggered automatically if your account is detected to be using text largely associated with rule breaking, such as advertising real world trading websites.

These mutes are very effective at keeping the volume of disruptive website advertising and similar rule breaking at a minimum in game.

You can avoid system mutes by:

  • Not naming websites associated with cheating and gold selling
  • Not repeating phrases you have seen website advertising accounts use

We carry out regular checks and sampling to ensure that the chances of a genuine player receiving a system mute are as low as they can be, however if you do use phrases associated with rule breaking (even with good intent) you may be muted for a short while until we can review the context of your conversation and lift the mute on your account.

It’s never our intention to mute players not involved in rule breaking and on the very rare occasion that a genuine player is system muted we will act as quickly as we can to get the mute lifted and return you to normal chat. In some situations a system mute can lead to an offence on an account with an associated mute, when this happens an offence will be listed in your account settings and members can submit appeals for those incidents if they wish.

Unfortunately due to technical restrictions, it is not always possible to show you the evidence of a system mute or provide you with an option to appeal system mutes. However if a system mute leads to an offence being added to your account, members will have the option to appeal it and view evidence in most situations.

If a Player Moderator has muted your account it means they believe your conversation needs reviewing by Jagex and you will be unable to chat normally in RuneScape or post on our Official Forums until Jagex have reviewed the reported conversation.

There are 3 possible outcomes from a Player Moderator mute:

  1. The reported incident is dealt with by means of a 'Time Out' mute (see section below).
  2. Jagex decide that the mute issued was fair and reasonable given the conversation text, and the rule breaking is very serious – the report will then be processed as a ‘Jagex Mute’ (see section below).
  3. Jagex decide the mute was not appropriate and the mute will be immediately lifted from your account. Also, the Player Moderator who issued the mute will be provided with feedback. Unfortunately due to technical restrictions, it is not always possible to show you the evidence or provide you with an option to appeal Player Moderator mutes.

Jagex decide that a report received is fair and reasonable given the conversation text, but that the rule breaking is not deemed really serious. The Jagex employee reviewing the incident feels that the situation is best dealt with by enabling a short restriction from normal chat so that the player can reflect on their behaviour but not face any longer term penalties.

In these situations you will remain muted for a short while (a bit like a ‘time out’) but you will not receive an offence on your account.

The decision about whether a report should receive a ‘time out’ mute or a Jagex Mute is taken by Jagex, and cannot be chosen by the reporting player or Player Moderator.

‘Time out’ mute periods are always shorter than Jagex mute periods. Unfortunately due to technical restrictions, it is not possible to show you the evidence or provide you with an option to appeal ‘time out’ mutes.

If a Jagex Moderator has muted your account it means they have reviewed a report from a Player Moderator or a regular player and believe your conversation contains serious rule breaking. Jagex Moderators can also mute accounts based on investigations carried out by Jagex staff.

The majority of Jagex Mutes will include evidence of the rule breaking which led to the mute, usually in the form of a version of your chat log or as manually entered text from the Jagex Moderator.

In some limited and quite specific situations, you may not be provided with evidence, this is usually when we believe that providing evidence may compromise current or future rule breaking investigations or may provide information about rule breaking detection that we are not prepared to share.
